Wengen
Wengen is a Swiss town of the Bernese Oberland belonging to the commune of Lauterbrunnen, in the canton of Bern. It is the largest population of said commune. It is located 1274 meters above sea level, at the foot of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains and 400 meters above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. It belongs to the tourist region of Jungfrau, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in December 2001 and extended in 2007 under the name Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch.
Since 1893, Wengen can be accessed from Lauterbrunnen with the Wengernalpbahn rack railway. Without a connection to the road network there is no traffic, except for some electric taxis. Wengen has about 1,300 inhabitants throughout the year, although its population increases to more than 10,000 in the winter high season and approximately 5,000 in the high summer season. [Citation needed] Wengen is known as "the town of Jungfrau", as well as by Celebrate the Lauberhorn ski competition, one of the most celebrated races of the Alpine Skiing World Cup.
It has a Protestant church, built in 1953 and qualified as a protected monument, as well as an Anglican and a Catholic church.
