Aviles

Aviles is a city and a Spanish council located in the Principality of Asturias, in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, on both sides of the Aviles estuary. In 2018, the municipality had a registered population of 78,715 inhabitants, being the third largest municipal capital in Asturias, in number of inhabitants. The council is one of the twenty grouped municipalities that form the central metropolitan area of Asturias.
There is evidence of human settlements since prehistory, although it is noteworthy that a permanent population did not originate in the city until after Roman times. In the 10th century with the obtaining of the jurisdiction at the hands of King Alfonso VI, the city obtains a series of privileges by being designated the realengo, among which is the power to hold fairs and a weekly market. During the Modern Age there was a moment of splendor with the arrival of numerous nobility who sought to build their plots in the town and the rise of the bourgeoisie, but from then on a long period of decline began that would only be saved with the trade of goods with America and the subsequent arrival of the railroad in addition to its intensive industrialization, eminently steel, in the mid-twentieth century.
It conserves in its old case an artistic historical complex composed of several palaces, noble houses, churches, squares, streets and large parks, along with a cultural heritage in which the Museum of Urban History and the Niemeyer Center stand out. Of the various events that are held each year in the city are worth mentioning its Antroxu, the Feast of the Bun or the Avilés Interceltic Festival.
It is located just 25 km from Gijón, 27 km from the capital, Oviedo and is connected through a wide network of highways, railways and buses, being also one of the main fishing and freight ports in Spain.

Chapel of the Wings

The funeral chapel of the Alas family (s. XIV) is located on the northern flank of the temple of the Franciscan Fathers of Aviles (former parish of San Nicolás de Bari). This area, adjacent to the medieval wall, was occupied by the cemetery of the town until its transfer in 1813 to a meadow near the disappeared convent of La Merced. Originally it was an exempt and self-sufficient construction, and it would rival in visual prominence from the estuary with the parish church of San Nicolás. In addition, its funerary destiny, its spatial autonomy, its material ambition and, above all, the individual character of its promoter warn us of the emergence of a new mentality, less collective and more personal, that pursues the social consolidation of the principal and his lineage.
In 1991 the chapel was declared a Property of Cultural Interest (BIC) (BOPA, 14-XI-1994).

Valdecarzana Palace

The Valdecarzana Palace, also known as the House of Baragañas, is located in the Asturian town of Avilés.
It is a palace belonging to the Gothic style built between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries by a rich Avilian merchant to serve as his private home. In addition, it also has a low area used in the beginning to market and store the products, since it has several ogival arches with dust covers arranged for this purpose.
The part of the house is also characterized by having four windows geminated as a gallery, with the windowsill decorated with saw teeth.
It is the oldest civil building in Asturias and the only non-religious example of the Gothic style in the town, it is also characterized as the only example of bourgeois architecture present in it. It should be noted that of the original structure, only the south facade is currently standing, which was completely secured and restored during the 20th century to convert the building into the Historical Archive of Aviles.
Between generations the belief has passed that King Pedro I the Cruel when he freed the city in 1352 from his bastard brother's troops, the insurgent Enrique de Trastámara stayed in this palace.
