Vitoria

Vitoria (in Basque, Gasteiz and, officially, Vitoria-Gasteiz) is a Spanish city , capital of Álava, and official seat of Parliament and the Government of the autonomous community of the Basque Country.
Nestled at a crossroads, it has been an important strategic point throughout history both in the military and commercial and cultural fields. Since Roman times, in which the road between Astorga and Bordeaux passed through Álava, these lands have not ceased to be an axis of communications between the Central Plateau and Europe. It is a city with an intense history that manifests itself in a valuable monumental heritage. He holds the title of "very noble and very loyal."
In 2017 there were 246,976 registered residents in the municipality, although as of 2018, the Municipal Register of Vitoria-Gasteiz confirms the existence of 252,574 citizens, thus occupying the seventeenth position among the most populated municipalities in Spain.
In the absence of more explicit legal recognition, it is considered de facto capital of the Basque Country for hosting the common institutions. During 2012, Vitoria was the European Green Capital.
