Mannheim
Mannheim ([ˈmanhaɪm]) is, after Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, the third city of Baden-Württemberg, one of the federated states of Germany. Industrial city together with the city of Ludwigshafen, located on the other side of the Rhine, forms an urban agglomeration that exceeds 480,000 inhabitants.
It is an important railway junction and a large river port at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers.
The University of Mannheim occupies the baroque castle.
During the 18th century, the so-called Mannheim School, an important orchestra, recognized throughout Europe and promoted by Carlos Teodoro, Elector Prince of the Palatinate, emerged in this city. This school was a student of the pianist and composer Jacob Rosenhain, who was the son of this city.
