Wernigerode (German pronunciation: [ˌvɛɐ̯nɪɡəˈʁoːdə]) is a city located in the district of Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Until 2007 it was the capital of the Wernigerode District. Its population was 35,041 inhabitants in 2012.
Wernigerode is located southwest of Halberstadt, and has a picturesque location on the banks of the Holtemme River, on the northern slope of the Harz Mountains. Wernigerode is located on the German Route of lattice architecture.

Wernigerode Castle (in German, Schloss Wernigerode) is a palatial castle (Schloss) located in the Harz Mountains above the city of Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The current building, completed in the middle of the 19th century, is similar in style to Neuschwanstein Castle, although its foundation is much older. It is open to the public and is one of the most visited in Saxony-Anhalt.
