Cologne (Germany)
Cologne (in German: Köln [kœln]; in kölsch: Kölle [ˈkœɫə]) is the fourth largest city in Germany, preceded by Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, and the most populous within the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, although Düsseldorf is the state capital. Founded in the year 38 a. C. as Oppidum Ubiorum ("City of the Ubios"), was later declared a Roman colony with the name of Colony Claudia Ara Agrippinensium in reference to Empress Agrippina, wife of Emperor Claudius and mother of Nero.
It is an important economic and cultural center of international importance and represents one of the most important enclaves of the artistic world. It is famous for being the headquarters of the most spectacular carnival in the country. It is also the headquarters of many associations, media companies and numerous television, record and publishing networks. Its importance resides in part in its most emblematic monument: the cathedral, its history of more than 2000 years, its numerous international events, such as its culture and gastronomy that make it one of the most visited destinations in Europe. The University of Cologne (about 50,000 students), the Higher Technical School of Cologne (about 25,000 students) and other higher schools represent the great educational and research importance within the Rhine-Ruhr region.
The excellent location on the Rhine River, in the middle of the main trade routes between east and west, as a secular headquarters as an Imperial Free City as well as its ecclesiastical power through the archbishopric in the Holy Roman Empire, earned him great prestige and importance in the country. As a Hanseatic city, it gained much commercial importance through free trade with the rest of the Hansa. Its importance as a nerve center of communications continues today with the large number of train passengers leaving each day from the Central Station (Hauptbahnhof), and the Köln Eifeltor station, which is one of the largest railway loading yards for transport of merchandise The railway infrastructure is complemented by four interior ports for trains. Air transport is also important in the city due to the Cologne / Bonn airport.
