Church of the Immaculate Conception (Mijas)

The church of the Immaculate Conception of Mijas (province of Malaga, Spain) is located in the upper part of the town, inside what was the original population center. After the fall of Mijas in Castilian hands, the former inhabitants were expelled. The repopulation of the municipality was slow and the consolidation of the new inhabitants did not work until the first quarter of the 16th century.
The new religious building began to be built between 1540 and 1565. It was built at the initiative of Bishop Bernando Manrique, on the ruins of a mosque and a castle. Being in 1631 when it was consecrated on September 1 of that year.
The rectangular church divided into three naves by semicircular arches resting on marble columns. The roof of the central nave has a Mudejar-style wooden frame, the side vaults of half-barrel. The bell tower, with a quadrangular section and Mudejar style, is robust, the result of being the old castle tower. On the south side, two chapels with a square floor and dating to the seventeenth century are opened.
The chapel that opens to the nave of the Gospel consists of an edge vault and decorated in fleshy and bulky plasterwork in which floral motifs such as acanthus leaves and other flowers are appreciated. The next chapel, the one that opens next to the Epistle, is composed of a hemispherical vault with a central medallion and nerves exchanged with bands and fruits. The decoration is completed with the shield of the old feudal lord and the old shield of the town, in addition to a plaque commemorating the work dated in 1705.
The church has had to undergo several restoration processes, the most important was the rush in 1992 and it affected the roof, the frame and the braces of the church. During the reconstruction, eight frescoes of apostles of unknown authorship were found, although the studies date the frescoes at the stage of the Renaissance baroque. The good preservation of the frescoes has allowed its complete recovery.
There is news of a church of the Immaculate since the fifteenth century, which was confirmed as a parish in the early years of the sixteenth century.
