Calahonda (Mijas)
Calahonda is an area located in the municipality of Mijas (Málaga) in the autonomous community of Andalucía, Spain; that owes its name to the beach of Calahonda, whose name the developer used, D. Juan de Orbaneja y Desvalls, to designate that area and the part of the urbanization in Marbella, Puerto Cabopino, then known as Calahonda. Urbanization began in 1963, being the largest and most populated in the municipality of Mijas. It is maintained by its owners who manage an annual budget to deal with the maintenance of common areas (sidewalks, asphalting, street lighting, cleaning, cleaning of green areas, fire plan ...) through a board of directors composed of owners of the urbanization of different nationalities. It has more than 27 kilometers of streets, about 7,000 homes, 600,000 square meters of green areas. The predominant population is not of Spanish origin, being composed mainly of British, Scandinavian, German expatriates.
It is located halfway between the towns of Fuengirola and Marbella, although it is under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Mijas, except for Cabopino beach and its port, originally from Calahonda, which belongs to Marbella. The area of the urbanization belonging to the municipality of Marbella, was segregated and is currently the Cabopino Urbanization. The majority of the 4,000,000 square meters of Calahonda (Urb. Site of Calahonda with 3,000,000 meters, Urb. Calypso with 400,000 meters and others with the rest) are dedicated to residential area and golf courses, with three large shopping areas that house most of the restaurants, cafes and pubs in the town, as well as several banks and supermarkets.
