Baetulo

The Roman city of Baetulo configures a first-order archaeological site of the Roman era in Spain. He has worked illustrious archaeologists and scholars, among others J. de C. Serra i Ráfols, Gaietá Soler, J. Font i Cussó and J. M. Cuyás.
In the basement of the historic center of Badalona, archeology has been revealing, since the eighteenth century and especially since the end of the last century, numerous remains of the ancient city. Baetulo is already mentioned in the classical sources, which describe it as "parvus oppidum" (Pomponio Mela) and "oppidum civium romanorum" (Pliny the Elder). From the epigraphy found in the site - especially from the series of honorary inscriptions found when making the foundations of the church of Santa María and the hospitality and pattern table between the inhabitants of the city and an illustrious character , dated from the year 98 of our era–, these archaeological remains have been identified as those of the ancient Baetulo.
The city was founded «ex novo» around 100 BC. C. with documented survival until the 6th century d. C. and with uninterrupted continuity until today. It was located on a small elevation between two torrents, Folc and Matamoros, near the sea and with open communications and good agricultural possibilities nearby. The founding city had an area of 10 hectares and was surrounded by a wall that alternated square and semicircular defense towers. Its urban distribution followed an orthogonal plane, oriented from northwest to southeast, with the transverse axes parallel to the coast and adapting to the topography of the land through a system of terraces that allowed to save the slopes of the hill where the city settled. The interior was distributed in insulae or islands of houses, with streets five meters wide.
Among the architectural remains exhumed and preserved in situ there are some really exceptional pieces for their meaning and conservation status. The thermal building of the 1st century BC stands out. C., visited in the basement of the Municipal Museum, one of the first copies of this type of building in the Iberian Peninsula; the domus of the central atrium of Lladó Street, of similar chronology, a very characteristic example of an Italian house, with mosaics that pave its different rooms; the public building in an area near the forum area, as well as the remains of the wall reinforced with terraced towers, the bronze quices that supported the access door to the city and a section of a large water conduit with a barrel vault . All these remains show us an urban planning model of the Roman colonial foundations of this era, with a type of public and private buildings that reproduce the architecture of the Italian cities of the moment, as well as life forms and decorative fashions.
The main axis of the economy of Baetulo was the commercialization and export of the production of wine grown in the nearby Roman villages, becoming a further example of the Roman concept of the city as an entity formed indissolubly by the urban nucleus and its territory .
