Roman city of Iluro

The archaeological remains that are preserved under the old town of Mataró (Province of Barcelona, Spain) have been identified as those of the ancient Roman city of Iluro from the epigraphic findings documented at the site, the news provided by the classical sources (Pliny the Elder, Pomponio Mela and Ptolemy, which refer to Iluro as one of the "oppida parva" of the coast) and the study of exhumed archaeological remains. From all these references the importance of the city in Roman times follows.
The assessment and study of his remains began in the seventeenth century and has continued to this day, in research related to archaeologists and eminent historians, such as Josep Calassanç Serra i Ràfols, Francesch Carreras, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Marià Ribas and Bertran and , fundamentally, the group of collaborators of the Archaeological Section of the Museum of Mataró.
The old Iluro was the continuator, as the organizing center of the territory, of another previous Roman city, probably ILDURO, a name that appears written, in Iberian characters, in bronze coins from the 2nd - 1st century BC. C., recently found in Cabrera de Mar (population located about five kilometers from the current Mataró). Urbanistically, the new Roman ILURO was founded «ex novo» in the first half of the 1st century BC. C. on a small hill, about 28 meters high above sea level, located between two streams, the current streets of the Riera and the Rierot, and reached an urban area of about 6 hectares.
The urban structure of the city, partly fossilized in the layout of some current streets of the historic center of Mataró and partly hypothetically rebuilt from the known archaeological remains, is a good example of regular Roman urbanism, with rectangular perimeter and orthogonal network of streets. Archaeological stratigraphs document the continuity of Iluro until the beginning of the 7th century AD. C., with two moments, apart from the foundation, of special dynamism and vitality, dated, respectively, in the second and fourth centuries AD. C. Previously, in the time of August, he reached the legal regime of municipality.
Among other urban elements, it conserves traces of the surrounding wall, as well as the forum, of various public buildings, streets, houses, a large cistern, the market (macellum), sewers and pipes, and urban and suburban necropolis. They have also found what look like remains of a Paleochristian temple. Of the numerous architectural remains exhumed at the site, those of a large manor house with mosaic flooring of “opus signinum” stand out, located under the Great Square. Also noteworthy is the archaeological site of Can Xammar, now destroyed, in the southeast corner of the city, where the remains of a remarkable building were documented, with mosaics that paved the various rooms, probably the thermal baths of the city, with their dependencies Thermal and Palestra.
The area of influence of the city of Iluro was very wide, following the Roman concept of the city as an entity formed indissolubly by the urban center and its territory, which would include much of the current region of El Maresme.
